The “Sling Cannon” was a bag with clever pockets on the shoulder strap. One of the pockets held your mp3 player which connected to the speaker that came out of the top of the pack so you could play music out loud while wearing the pack.

Part of the Moby collection, this was the basketball bag: oversized to fit a ball, sneakers, clothes and integrated with a built-in mp3 player and LOUD speaker.

This bag was designed to hold your gear and a skateboard. An mp3 player could be plugged inside the bag and music could be heard via the stand-collar at the top of the bag that held speakers that were about the size of a quarter.
We had something like two weeks to build three “Moby” bags with integrated music playing capabilities. The designers, Bobby Chang, Joe Tan and I all worked many long hours on this three bag project together. But it couldn’t have been a better experience. Astro is one of my favorite design consultancies. No matter how late it got and how tired we all were everyone remained positive and encouraging. Talk about great workplace morale! Nike was thrilled with the results.

Maria Sharapova 2006 French Open Bag

All of the outer parts of this leather bag were laser-etched at Nike with Dunny Bunnies (see www.kidrobot.com) and the custom printed lining was little clusters of green camo-colored Dunny Bunnies. Nike’s a prototyper’s playground: so many machines to sample all kinds of materials and products.

Cowboy boots and undershirt
My friend Jeff, asked me to make a little ribbed undershirt and red cowboy boots for his puppet “Tata”. I enjoyed the process of building the boots and the tiny undershirt and was pleased with the way they turned out. The boots are about 4 inches tall, the outer is made of red lambskin, lined with goatskin and the handstitched soles and stacked leather heels are made of vegetable tanned leather. Just like a pair of real boots except in mini.

Apple iPod Case 2002

Apple kept me busy for a while and I built all kinds of different prototypes that are still secret. Maybe a year later, during a meeting at another design consultancy, one designer was praising the iPod case and how perfectly it had been made. What a nice compliment. This designer wasn’t aware I’d developed the patterns and production set-up.

This was one of my first “soft goods” (non-fashion) projects for an animal husbandry exhibit by the name of “Mating Games” at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. Later it traveled to the Aquarium of The Americas in New Orleans, Louisiana.
